NYC Water Quality Project Coordinator

Position Overview 

Riverkeeper seeks a Project Coordinator for its Legal Program, reporting to a Staff Attorney. The Project Coordinator will largely focus on creating three community-focused reports on restoration, resiliency, recreation, and water quality remediation of the waters of New York City. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for community engagement, report writing, managing experts and outside consultants, and delivering final products for these reports. Additional work will include advocacy and outreach (including engagement of elected officials, city, state, and federal agencies, and collaboration with community and citywide water organizations) on matters relating to Riverkeeper’s New York City water pollution campaigns. The position requires significant independent work and a commitment to attend meetings and appointments that may be outside of normal business hours. 

Responsibilities 
  • Develop a report on stormwater management in New York City
  • Develop community-driven reports detailing remediation, restoration, resilience, and recreation opportunities for two discrete New York City waterways: Newtown Creek and Flushing Bay/Creek
    • For these reports, the Project Coordinator will be expected to set up meetings with community stakeholders (including government agencies, elected officials, local businesses and industries, and community members and residents), and find, secure, and manage outside experts and consultants
  • Work with the SWIM Coalition and its member organizations on combined sewer system, separate storm sewer system, and green infrastructure campaigns
  • Work with Riverkeeper staff and local communities on Superfund Site advocacy in Newtown Creek and Gowanus Canal
  • Other duties, as required. 

Preferred Skills and Expertise


Riverkeeper is looking for a qualified landscape designer, urban planner, environmental advocate, or other experienced project manager and advocate with an exceptional commitment to the environment and a strong academic and experiential-learning record. Riverkeeper prefers candidates with 2-4 years experience, but will consider any and all qualified applicants.

Hours and Compensation


This position is a one-year, full-time position at 40 hours per week with full benefits. Opportunity for extension beyond one year is subject to grant/funding availability and Riverkeeper campaign needs.
